The square is striking to enter with a vastness overwhelming and impossible to project with a photo. The effect is heightened by time spent in the cramped streets that make up the rest of the city, leaving you with a suspicion that the narrowness of everything else was a subconscious ploy to prepare you for this one grand reveal.
