Deep skies over Lake Thun in the German-speaking town of Spiez. It was a gorgeous and warm setting for lunch before continuing our friend-guided tour into the glacial chill of the mountains.

A church in the tiny Swiss village of Les Brenets. The village is nestled against the border of France, demarcated by the village's lake. In the winter the lake freezes and the villagers can cross the ice into their neighbouring country.

This region, which includes the towns of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle, is the home of watch-making in Switzerland. Almost every large building is signed with a famous brand – Cartier, TAG Heuer, Tissot, Louis Vuitton, Rolex.

A quick trip across the top of Italy delved into the Simplon Pass, a meandering road of bridges, tunnels and hairpins through steep and spectacular terrain. Terrain from an oil painting, a palette knife smudges white, punctures with chops of grey, smooths over with flows of green and blue.
